Birmingham New Street Area Resignalling

FJD Consulting were tasked with the detailed design of the canopy mounted signals at Birmingham New Street Station. To simplify installation, our team developed standardised designs for the signal structure, positioning and adjustment.
Having in mind the long, curved shape of the platforms and movement of trains in and out of the station in opposite directions, it was essential signal sighting requirements were understood. We undertook CAD exercises to assess the signal alignment requirements, which informed the final design specifications for adjustments and support structures.
The team analysed all the possible scenarios for each signal on various platforms and overlapped results to produce a master design that could serve the specifications of the majority of locations of structures.
The final design developed was used as a blueprint for 75% of all the structures required for each platform. In addition to that, we have developed variations of the standard design for location that required an different positioning.
