FJD Consulting were tasked with the detailed design of the platform overlay design at Pentrebach Station, Merthyr Tydfil, South Wales. A platform overlay system was selected by the client to simplify the modification of the platform coper, and remove the need for intrusive modifications of the existing platform structure.

Building upon our past experience within platform gauging projects, the design team assessed the proposed coper alignment developed by the track designer to determine the adjustment relative to the
existing coper string.

We undertook CAD exercises to assess the impact of the proposed adjustment on the existing platform cross-falls and level. The proposed platform surface was then modelled to provide compliance to the governing standards and minimise the extent of tie-in to the existing infrastructure. The team assessed the interface with existing platform assets and designed bespoke details to accommodate in consultation with the fabricator.

TECHNICAL EXPERTISE
-Gauging interface.

PROJECT IMPACT
The scheme enhanced the safety and timeliness of rail journeys through the provision of level boarding at Pentrebach Station for the new train fleet being brought into use by TfW on the South Wale Core Valley Lines.

We collaborated with a local contractor based in South Wales, thus supporting the use of SMEs in the delivery of project scope for TfW. We provided design solutions that facilitate the rapid installation of a compliant platform to achieve project level boarding requirements.
