FJD Consulting have delivered the lighting, emergency lighting and associated LV infrastructure design at Polsloe Bridge Station. The station had been lit via temporary 110v lighting for a prolonged period due to the technical difficulties in sourcing a lighting solution to the platform.

Due to its construction, the platform would not support a traditional column system so the M&E design team developed a low level, handrail mounted system in conjunction with Design Plan Lighting and our inhouse Civil Engineering team. This solution not only over comes the platform construction issue, but it has also incorporated intelligent dimming and control to reduce energy use when the platform is not occupied. The biggest challenge with this solution was eliminating glare for the train drivers, whilst also ensuring we achieved compliant lux levels and uniformity on the platform and in the vertical plane at the platform edge.
Further to this, FJD sourced a retrofit LED handrail solution to resolve a current non-compliant staircase at the station entrance, reducing installation costs and minimising installation time.

All of this will be backed up via a 3hr duration static inverter to ensure compliance with NR emergency lighting requirements. Due to its external location, the static inverter incorporated environmental control to ensure battery life and condition are maintained.

CHALLENGES
- A traditional column system could not be supported by the station platform.

PROJECT IMPACT
- The solution we developed generated savings of 87% in comparison to the original design solution;
- Increased energy efficiency via intelligent dimming and control;
- Solution developed for a noncompliant staircase;
- Compliance reached with NR emergency lighting requirements.
